Hawaii 2024 - Part 3

KCC farmers market near diamond head is swarmed with tourists and some locals.

Jen's mom was so excited she got like $80 worth of abalone to share with everyone and it was more than we all wanted to eat.

I got a corned beef lau lau and stacy bought this plant for the back yard and we tried the Pig and Lady pho which is SERIOUSLY good.

I said this tonkatsu place sounds awesome so we all drove over there for lunch. On the way we stopped at this place btwn diamond head and waikiki where you go down this steep hill for what look like waves that are bigger than waikiki but not crazy like the north shore. Eleanor said this is where she learned to surf.

Tonkatsu Tamafuji was awesome but we had to wait for like an hour and we got there when it opened for lunch. Might have overheard that if you have a large party you can make reservations. There was a tanuki statue outside so i kept Emma busy with various things Tanukis can do and what they can transform into.

Bailey's Antique aloha shirts. I got 3 shirts there last time, will i have luck again?

no luck this time. The coolest shirts were hanging up with plastic covering the shoulders and were $3-$8,000.

They'd never been to an Obon matsuri which they call Bon Dance in hawaii

I waited like an hr in line for this andagi. It's good but not worth the wait. They were makin' bank I assume.

not even an anadog can make it worth the wait.

you dance around this central shrine thing, all generations, like line dancing, and there's people in the center that know the dances

Cattle egrets follow around the lawnmowers for whatever bugs pop up.

Went to the Bishop museum by myself since they went before I arrived in Hawaii. This is a model of the Hokule'a, which was a replica of an ancient Hawaiian voyaging canoe. In 1976 a team set out to prove that Hawaii wasn't settled by chance, that they're history isn't one of chance, it was through deliberate effort and perseverance. They sailed from Tahiti to Hawaii without navigational instruments. The voyage took 33 days and it shows how they can use stars and swells to get there. It captured the imagination and inspired and sparked pride in Polynesia. This story makes my heart swell, really inspirational.

Steven works for Rakuten now and theres these Rakuten card lounges all over the island

We met Hannah and Jack who used to live near us in brooklyn but moved upstate so this was our first time seeing them in a while. We went to house without a key and then the Green Lady "speakeasy".
