Hawaii 2024 - Part 1

Jen left a week before me to spend 3 weeks in Hawaii at her childhood home in Hawaii Kai on Oahu and I left later to spend 12 days. We got 3 friends to watch the dog + our local dog sitter for a few days. After a 12 hr flight which included hrs of sketching out tattoo ideas (that didn't end up happening) and zoning out and like 5 hrs of playing civilization 6 on nintendo switch i arrived to a house full of all 3 Yoo sisters, their kids, the Yoo parents, and i was the only husband there. My mission this time around was to get a better feel for what it would be like to live there. This is from their backyard.

I grabbed a beer and walked to the back of Hawaii Kai to the cassava fields and that weird road where people live kind of off the grid and John the guy that lives at the end of the road takes the stray cats to get fixed lives. I didn't notice this kitty graveyard last time.

a few hrs later had to meet Erik and James in waikiki cuz he was flying out the next day. Afterward james took us to Lava Lounge in waikiki for some old school kitsch and lava flows

almost everyone hikes up to the Makapu'u lighthouse but if you hike down you'll find Alan Davis Beach, snorkling, a lil bay that any kids can swim in, and locals jumping off a cliff underneath a big rock feature called "Pele's Chair". And these birds

Uncle Clay's House of Pure aloha shave ice from natural flavors not syrups.  Really good, somewhere tourists won't go to and it's been around since Jen was in school

4th of July in Hawaii actually had almost no fireworks. Probably cuz fire hazard, and also cuz the part of town we were were in was more white and afluent and the good ol connection of celebrating USA when Hawaii was ill gotten.

picking out the longer kind of grass for the shorter kind of grass. The grass you can have in hawaii is very cool

Koko head from the top of Lunalilo Home road which is mostly uphill and then very uphill.

Hawaiian beef stew from Nico's, the best i've had so far but there is for sure better and more authentic out there. But the nico's one was huge and good like most of their stuff

Koko Head from across the canal near Lalea

Koko Head from a lil futher down the road

Mariner's Ridge up there is always calling to me. The hike beyond the houses is permanently closed cuz someone died up there but I wonder what's up yonder in those always dramatic hills.

Koko Head from the weird road at the end of Hawaii Kai with lots of plant nurseries that I love walking down.

Diamond Head from the Suh's house where we went for 4th of July. It's Eleanor's husband's side of the family.

this is also Dubu
